The followers of Baptist preacher William Miller awaited the Second Coming throughout 1843 and 1844. When Christ failed to appear on October 22, 1844 (the fourth date set by Miller after the first three he predicted had failed to bring about the end times) the movement fell apart and became commonly referred to as “The Great Disappointment”.
